A bright, patriotic faux‑firecracker door hanger is an easy, eye‑catching craft that turns everyday toilet paper rolls into festive décor. The Mini Bowdabra adds the perfect finishing touch with full, fluffy bows that give the whole piece a polished, celebratory look.
This project is a great example of turning simple materials into something bold and festive. The “firecrackers” are made from recycled toilet paper rolls wrapped in patriotic paper, topped with tulle and ribbon “sparks,” and finished with a big, layered bow at the top. It’s lightweight, inexpensive, and perfect for front doors, porches, or indoor displays.

Let’s Make a Faux Firecracker Door Hanger:
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Prepare Six Firecracker Tubes
- Cut scrapbook paper to fit around each toilet paper roll.

- Wrap the tube and secure the seam with craft glue or double-sided tape.
- Option: Mix patterns—stripes, stars, and flag prints.
-
Prepare the Ribbons
- Cut two 4” x 12” strips of tulle for each firecracker. Plan for two bows in each color—red, white, and blue.
- Cut the ½” blue ribbon into 4” lengths. You’ll need three lengths for each firecracker. Dovetail the ends of these ribbons—fold the ribbon in half, and cut the fold at a 45°angle.

- Cut the ⅜” red ribbon into 3½” lengths. Again, you’ll need three lengths for each firecracker. Cut each end at a single 45° angle.
- Use the ⅛” white ribbon to make corker ribbon. Coil the ribbon around a thin skewer or oven-safe knitting needle. Moisten with water.
- Bake in a 250°F oven for 20 minutes. When the ribbon is cooled, cut into 3” lengths.

-
Create the Firecracker Bows
- Place an 18” length of twine into the Mini Bowdabra with about 2” extending on one side and the remaining length on the other side.

- Fold a 12” length of Bowdabra wire in half, and place it into the Mini Bowdabra.
- Layer the two lengths of tulle in the Mini Bowdabra.

- Next, layer the blue ribbons, followed by the red ribbons, and, finally, the white corker ribbons.

- Compress the ribbons with the Mini Bowdabra wand.
- With the ribbons still in the Mini Bowdabra, pass the wire ends through the loop and pull up tightly and tie a secure knot.

- With the ribbons tied and still in the Mini Bowdabra, tie the twine around the ribbons with a secure knot. The short tail goes to the back of the bow, and the longer end for hanging is at the front of the bow.
- Coil the bow wire ends around a thin skewer or knitting needle.

- Fluff the bow.

-
Assemble the Door Hanger
I am an advocate of recycle/reuse/repurpose, so the patriotic bow that I’m using for the top is one that I made several years ago.
Follow these instructions to make your own focal point bow.
- Pipe a bead of hot glue along the end of a toilet roll, and glue a firecracker bow in place with the short end of the twine hidden in the center of the rolls.

- Make the repurposed patriotic bow.
- Gather the long lengths of twine attached to each firecracker, and tie together a simple overhand knot.

- Attach the twines from the firecrackers to the repurposed patriotic bow at the top.
Display Ideas
- Hang it on your faux firecracker door hanger on the front door for Memorial Day or the Fourth of July.
- Use as porch décor paired with lanterns and flags,
- Add to a summer party backdrop or buffet table.
- Create a smaller version for indoor wall décor.
