Learn how to make a pinwheel hairbow in this quick and easy video DIY. Sandy Sandler, the creator of the Bowdabra, shows you how to layer grosgrain ribbon and fun black cat ribbon to create a perfectly shaped pinwheel bow without sewing. The simple “mountain fold” technique helps give the bow its signature shape, while the Mini Bowdabra® holds everything securely in place. This hairbow is perfect for party favors and gifts for your favorite little monster.
Materials and ribbon:
16” – 7/8” wide grosgrain ribbon of choice
18” – 1.5” wide grosgrain ribbon of choice
14” – 1.5” wide non-wired shimmer ribbon
Ponytail elastic
Instructions:
First, cut a piece of Bowdabra bow wire. Then, fold it in half and insert it into the Mini Bowdabra. You will have a loop on one side and two loose wires on the other side. This will serve as your slipknot. Tuck the ends under to stay out of the way while you are making your bow.
Next, scrunch in a piece of pre-dovetailed shimmer ribbon into the Mini Bowdabra. To dovetail, fold the ribbon in half and cut at an angle away from the fold.
Now, fold your choice of grosgrain ribbon in half to find the center. Then place in the Mini Bowdabra right side down and pinch a mountain fold in the center. Now, bring one side over and scrunch it into the Bowdabra with the tails facing down. Bring the other side over and scrunch in with the tails facing up.
Repeat this step with the 7/8″ wide ribbon.
Now, scrunch everything down with the Bowdabra wand. Then, insert the loose wires through the loop and pull tight while the bow is still in the Mini Bowdabra. Then, remove the bow from the Mini Bowdabra, separate the ends, turn to the back, and tie a knot. Tie a double knot for extra security.
Cut a piece of the shimmer ribbon and wrap it around the center of the hairbow. Bring it to the back and tie a knot, then use the ribbon to tie on a ponytail elastic. Clip all the wires and excess ribbon. Fluff and arrange your no-sew pinwheel hairbow.
