You’ll need these supplies:

  • Felt—realistic or fantasy colors
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue or fabric glue
  • Templates—fox, penguin, pig, horse, all templates
  • Pencil or washable fabric marker
  • Googly eyes
  • Black marker

Let’s make a felt finger puppet:

  1. Prepare puppet pieces: This step is the same for each of the animals.
    • Download and print the template/s of your choice.
    • Trace the puppet body template onto felt twice—one front and one back.
    • Trace additional accent shapes: eyes, nose, feet, etc.
    • As an alternative to tracing and cutting, you can use the sewer’s method of pinning the pattern to the fabric (felt) and cutting around the shape. Choose the method that works best for you.Pin Pattern to Fabric and Cut
    • Cut out the shapes.
  1. Add details: Position the features on one of the body pieces. Test the positioning before gluing the accent pieces in place. My preference is googly eyes—they add so much life to the puppet, and they’re easy to apply. Templates for the animals’ eyes and included if you opt not to use the googly eyes.
    • Fox: Use a black marker to draw eyes and a nose on the face piece. Draw Fox Nose and Eyes with Black MarkerGlue the belly and the face in place.Glue Belly and Face to Fox Felt Finger Puppet
    • Penguin: First, glue the belly in place. Next, glue the beak in place. Then, glue eyes in place—your choice of felt or googly eyes. Finally, glue the feet to the body.Glue Belly-Beak-Eyes and Feet to Penguin Felt Finger Puppet
    • Pig: Use a black marker to draw nostrils on the nose piece. Draw Nostrils on Pig NoseGlue the nose in place. Glue eyes in place—your choice of felt or googly eyes. Glue Nose and Eyes on Pig Felt Finger Puppet
    • Horse: Glue the mane to the back body piece. Glue Mane to Back Horse Body

    • When the glue is dry, use scissors to snip into the mane piece, creating “hair.” When the puppet is completed, the mane will be sandwiched between the front and back body pieces. Snip Mane to Create Hair

The eye will be on the front body piece. Either glue a tiny googly eye in place or draw a black marker dot. Glue Eye on Front Felt Finger Puppet

    • Assemble the puppet

    • Place the front and back body pieces together, wrong sides together.
    • Glue all the edges except the bottom.Glue Front and Back Body Pieces Together
