Fall is in the air!! Time to create autumn inspired art. This pinecone garland is the perfect project for young artists—and their adult helpers. Collecting the pinecones is a fun activity for youngsters.
Gather these 4 supplies to make the pinecone garland:
- Pinecones
- Acrylic paints—fall colors of your choice like reds, oranges, purples, greens, yellows, golds,
- Twine, yarn, or narrow ribbon
- Hot glue
Let’s make the garland:
- Gather the pinecones. First, you’ll want to “de-bug” them. Here you have a couple options. You can bake them at 200°F for half an hour. Or, freeze them overnight in a Ziploc bag. Next, use an old toothbrush or stiff bristled paint brush to brush away any dirt or debris.
- Now the fun begins!! Select your paint colors, and have at it! This is your garland, so you can determine how much coverage you want on the pinecones. I didn’t aim for 100% coverage. I like the look of the natural cone peeking through.

- Set the painted pinecones aside to dry thoroughly.

- The last step is to hot glue the twine to the top of the pinecones. I left six inches between cones, but the spacing is your decision.

Here’s three options for displaying your garland.
