How to Make a Paper Pieced Lucky Leprechaun Gnome Greeting Card

Share St. Patrick’s Day wishes with this lucky leprechaun gnome greeting card. It’s made with a technique called paper piecing. But, don’t let the name fool you—this technique is adaptable to all sorts of mediums like art foam, vinyl, balsa wood as well as paper and cardstock. We’ll be making a greeting card with this paper pieced gnome, but the gnome could be used on a banner or add a magnet for a frig decoration.

Gather these supplies:

• Paper or cardstock in St. Patrick’s colors—you’ll need black for the shoes and hat band, but the other pieces can be your choice of colors and patterns
• Blank greeting card (I used a 7″x5″ card)
• Cardstock for mounting
• Liquid glue or double sided tape
• Adhesive pop dots (optional)
• Template for the gnome pieces

Let’s make the leprechaun gnome card:

1. Print the template for the gnome pieces. Cut out the shapes, trace onto your selected papers, and cut of the pieces.
2. Add adhesive of your choice to the beard.
3. Position the beard on the body as shown.
4. Next, glue the hat in place.
5. Now glue the hat band right above the top of the beard.
6. Glue the nose in place.
7. Glue the shoes to the bottom center of the body.
8. Now, let’s use your leprechaun gnome to make a greeting card. The gnome will fit on a 5½”x4¼” notecard without resizing, but you might want to omit the mounting piece. Cut the mounting piece to size depending on the size of your notecard. You want the mounting piece to be smaller than the card front with equal margins on each side. For my 7″x5″ card the mounting piece is 6″x4″ with ½” margins on all sides. Center and glue the mounting piece to the card front.
9. Now, the gnome gets glued to the center of the mounting piece. As an option you can adhere the gnome with pop dots for a bit of added dimension. Position the pop dots on the reverse side of the gnome, then glue to the center of the mounting piece.
