How to Make a Thanksgiving Greeting Card

Thanksgiving is more than turkey and pie—it’s a moment to pause, reflect, and express gratitude. What better way to share that spirit than with a handmade greeting card? This simple yet elegant project features the timeless sentiment “Give Thanks” and three oak leaf silhouettes that evoke the beauty of autumn.

For young artists—beginner or seasoned crafter—this card is a heartfelt way to connect with loved ones and celebrate the season.Thanksgiving Greeting Card

Gather these materials:

  • Three scraps of cardstock in your choice of assorted autumn colors that are at least 5” x 2”
  • One scrap of light brown or tan cardstock that measures 2¾” x 1¼”
  • One sheet 8½” x 11” white cardstock
  • Oak Leaf Template
  • Liquid craft glue

Let’s make your Thanksgiving greeting card:

Make the Card Base—Cut the sheet of white cardstock in half width-wise. You’ll now have two pieces, each 8½” x 5½”. Fold these pieces in half to get two cards—each 5½” wide x 4¼” high.

Create the Oak Leaves—Download and print the Oak Leaf Template. Be sure to select “print actual size.”

Use one template for each of the three colored pieces of cardstock. With a thin line of glue at the top strip, position the template on the colored cardstock. Glue Template to Cardstock Strip

First, cut out the oak leaf and set it aside.

The remaining part of the template should still be attached to the cardstock. Next, cut the remaining vertical sides. Cut Away Vertical Sides of Strip

Finally, cut the horizontal line at the top.Cut Horizontal Line at Top of Strip

Arrange & Adhere—Center one of the strips on the face of the card, and glue it in place. Add the other strips to the side of the first, leaving about ¼” between the strips.Glue Strips in Place

Position the leaves under the strips. Play with spacing until you’re satisfied, then glue them in place.Position and Glue Leaves in Place

Add the Sentiment—Stamp, hand-letter, or print “Give Thanks” on the light brown cardstock. Glue the sentiment to the front of the card.Add Sentiment Tag to Thanksgiving Greeting Card

Why Handmade Matters

In a world of digital messages, a handcrafted card stands out. It says, “I took time for you.” And during Thanksgiving, that sentiment is everything. Whether you tuck it into a gift basket, place it at a dinner setting, or mail it across the miles, your card becomes a keepsake of gratitude.Thanksgiving Greeting Card (Instagram)
