A sugar scrub is a simple, natural exfoliating treatment made from sugar combined with an oil. The sugar granules gently buff away dead skin cells, while the oil moisturizes and softens the skin.
Lavender Sugar Scrub Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup solid or liquid coconut oil
- 1 to 2 tablespoons dried lavender buds
- Optional: 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil for extra skin nourishment
- Optional: ⅛ teaspoon purple mica powder
Let’s Make Lavender Sugar Scrub
1. Melt or Soften the Coconut Oil
If you’re using solid coconut oil, gently warm it until it becomes pourable but not hot. If you’re using liquid coconut oil, go right to Step 2.
2. Mix the Sugar and Oil
In a mixing bowl, combine the granulated sugar and coconut oil. Stir well until the mixture has the texture of wet sand. Adjust by adding more sugar if it’s too oily or more oil if it’s too dry. Now is the time to add the vitamin E oil which will boost the scrub’s skin benefits.
3. Add Dried Lavender Buds
If you’re using mica powder, stir it into the sugar/oil mixture. Next, stir in the dried lavender buds for a natural exfoliant and visual appeal.
4. Package Your Scrub
Spoon the scrub into clean jars and seal.
5. Glam Up Your Lavender Sugar Scrub with a Bowdabra Bow
For the bow you’ll need:
- 2 feet 8” white tulle
- 1½ to 2 yards ¼” grosgrain ribbon
- 2 8” lengths ¼” grosgrain ribbon
- 18” Bowdabra bow wire
- Mini Bowdabra
Step 1. Fold the bow wire in half, and place in the Mini Bowdabra.
Step 2. Fold the tulle in half lengthwise. Scrunch the folded tulle into the Mini Bowdabra.
Step 3. Cut angles on the ends of the 8” lengths of grosgrain ribbon. Quickly pass the ends through a flame to seal the ribbon. Layer these two lengths of ribbon in the Mini Bowdabra. These will be the tails of the bow.
Step 4. Layer loops of the 1½ to 2 yard length of grosgrain ribbon in the Mini Bowdabra.
Step 5. With the ribbon and tulle still in the Mini Bowdabra, pass the wire ends through the loop. Pull up tightly, and tie a secure knot on the front side of the bow. Leave the wire ends uncut.
Step 6. Wrap the bow wire around a skewer or slender knitting needle to produce a decorative coil.
Step 7. Fluff the bow.
Step 8. Use a strong adhesive or hot glue to affix the bow to the jar lid.
How to Use a Sugar Scrub
- Start With Damp Skin—Use the scrub in the shower or at the sink. Water softens the skin and helps the scrub glide smoothly.
- Scoop Out a Small Amount—A tablespoon or two is usually enough for hands, feet, or arms.
- Massage Gently—Rub the scrub onto your skin using small circular motions. Focus on areas like hands, feet, elbows, knees, and legs. Avoid using sugar scrubs on irritated skin or the face.
- Rinse Thoroughly—Warm water will melt the sugar and wash away the oil, leaving your skin soft and moisturized.
- Pat Dry—Don’t rub. Patting helps keep the nourishing oils on your skin.
Making your own sugar scrub is a simple, rewarding project that benefits your skin and your creativity. Enjoy the process and the pampering results!
