How to make the best holiday buffalo plaid swag with Bowdabra

Buffalo Plaid Swag

It’s Christmas in July and I’m sharing how to make a white 30-inch buffalo plaid swag with a gorgeous purple buffalo plaid bow! Buffalo plaid is still very popular and quite trendy right now, but buffalo plaid decor is not new – it’s been around for a very long time!

The exciting thing for me about buffalo plaid these days is that you can find it in new colors and use it in new ways! And it’s not just for country or farmhouse decor anymore! I love purple buffalo plaid Christmas decorative accent items, especially done with a bow! And surprisingly, they give off a modern, fresh look for the upcoming holidays!

Materials Used:
Let’s start with a plain white 30-inch swag wreath.

The focal point on most wreaths is a pretty big bow! So I got out my trusty Bowdabra Bow Maker and made a lovely purple buffalo plaid bow that’s 10 inches wide! The Bowdabra is the best tool to use to make bows!

To Make the Bow:
First, fold an 18″ piece of Bowdabra bow wire and place it into the Bowdabra, tucking ends under. Next, crease one end of the ribbon leaving a 10-inch tail, and insert into the Bowdabra. Since the plaid design is only on one side, make a 5″ loop on one side and twist the ribbon down into the Bowdabra!
Next, fold and twist the other side at the same width for the next loop, creasing the ribbon down into the Bowdabra.  Continue to loop and twist on each side until you’re satisfied with the look. I made a total of eight loops, but you can make as many loops as you like for your bow! The Bowdabra will hold them all! Scrunch down the ribbon using the Bowdabra Wand.
Make a slip knot by taking the loose ends of the bow wire through the wire loop, pulling tight while gently pulling the bow out. Separate the wires around to the back, tying in a double knot.

To give the tails a finished look called dove-tail, fold the ribbon and cut at an angle from the fold to the end corner. Snip into a V shape!
Then fluff and tie the bow onto the center of the buffalo plaid swag. Add additional purple and white ornaments and embellishments.
You will be ready for the busy holiday season with this adorable buffalo plaid swag!  Please visit Bowdabra designer, Gail at her blog Purple Hues and me for more of her beautiful craft projects.
