Bag tassel charms are a quick and easy way to jazz up any handbag, tote, or backpack. And, they are fabulous Mother’s Day gifts!!
Start with these supplies for a tassel bag charm:
- 9″ lengths of a variety of narrow ribbons, tulle, fun fibers, yarn, twine, embroidery floss, etc.
- 20″ length of embroidery floss or twine
- Lobster clasp or 25mm split ring
- Jump ring
- 10mm split ring
- Jewelry pliers
- Scissors
Let’s make a tassel bag charm for a Mother’s Day gift:
- Attach the split ring to the lobster clasp with the jump ring. You can substitute a 25mm split ring—the kind commonly found on key chains—for a lobster clasp. Directions for opening and closing jump rings are at the bottom of this post.
- Thread the ribbons and fibers through the split ring. A crochet hook or yarn needle may help as the ring gets more filled.
- Position the clasp in the center of the ribbons.
- Fold the ribbon bundle in half.
- With the 20″ length of thread form a 2″ open loop at one end.
- Lay the open loop on top of the ribbon bundle with the loop extending about ¼” beyond the end of the bundle and the long tail of this tying thread extending along the ribbon bundle.
- Use the long tail of the tying thread at the end opposite the loop to tightly wind the thread around the ribbon bundle and the loop to form a band about 3/8″ wide and ½” from the top of the bundle.
- Pass the end of the tying thread through the loop.
- Secure the wrap by gently pulling the end of the loop thread until the loop is hidden under the wrap.
- Trim the two loose ends of the tying thread close to the wrap.
- Have fun gifting the tassel bag charm to mom on her special day.
How to open and close jump rings:
- Use a pair of jewelry pliers, one in each hand. Hold the jump ring in the pliers with the opening on top.
- Twist the pliers in opposite directions—one side away from you; one side toward you.
- To close the jump ring, hold the pliers and jump ring as pictured above and twist the pliers to close the ring.
