Get those students ready for back to school with an extra special upcycled denim ponytail holder that will match almost every outfit of the week!
Up-Cycle those old jeans into a hair bow or a ponytail holder… Lots of hair bows and ponytail holders at that! You can customize them to many different styles and sizes too!
First, cut the waistband and the pockets off the jeans. Next, cut the leges off and use the legs to cut appoximately 5″ x 1/2″ strips.
Next, cut a piece of Bowdabra bow wire. Then, fold it in half and insert it into the Bowdabra. You will have a loop on one side and two loose wires on the other side. This will serve as your slipknot. Tuck the ends under to stay out of the way while you are making your ponytail holder bow.
Now using your cut denim strips begin by placing a longer 8″ piece in the bowdabra for tails. Then place the 5″ strips and make loops, or make it like a funky bow. The length of the strips can be whatever length you want for as many loops as you desire.
Now, scrunch everything down with the Bowdabra wand. Then, insert the loose wires through the loop and pull tight while the bow is still in the Bowdabra. Then, remove the bow from the Bowdabra, separate the ends, turn to the back and tie a knot. Tie a double knot for extra security. Cut a 8″ long strip and fold in half lengthwise and either glue or tie around the bow center to cover the wire.
If you don’t want to cover the wire with the folded denim, glue a flower or bead in the center of the bow. The options are limitless! You can also use that strip of denim in the center as a ruffle bow or scrunchy bow center. My bow here is a mix of funky bow loops & a loopy bow. I ended up with 5 tails on each side, mixed in with the 4 loops.
This is my go to ponytail holder bow now. It matches almost all of my outfits & is always on standby to rescue a bad hair day! Also, I just want to mention, this is the most sturdy and durable hairbow I’ve ever seen!
