Windsocks are so much fun!! With a little yarn and a recycled water bottle, your young artist can create this Fourth of July windsock.
You only need a few supplies:
- Empty plastic water bottle
- Permanent marker
- Hole punch (or hot nail held with pliers)
- Red, white, and blue yarn
Here’s how to make the patriotic windsock:
- For your fourth of July windsock, first cut the bottle into sections. I got three sections that were about 2½” to 3″ and one shorter section from the bottom of a one-liter bottle.
- Use a marker to mark the position of the holes. Since you’ll be using three colors of yarn, the holes need to be distributed around the lower edge of the windsock in groups of three. This way there will be a continuous red/white/blue repetition around the bottle. If you’re not happy with the placement that you’ve marked, alcohol will remove the marker, and you can begin again. You will also need two holes, opposite each other, at the top for a hanging cord.
- When you’re happy with the placement, punch the marked holes. You can use a paper punch, or hold a nail with pliers and heat it in a flame. It will melt through the plastic bottle.
- Cut yarn into 24″ lengths, and fold the length in half.
- Pass the loop of yarn through a hole.
- Pass the yarn ends through the loop, and tighten. You’ve just created a lark’s head knot. Continue to thread yarn through the holes, alternating colors, around the entire bottom edge of the windsock.
- Pass a length of yarn through the top holes, and tie the ends together to form a hanger.
- Display your patriotic windsock with pride!!
