Use the Bowdabra to make this adorable St Patrick’s Day green hair bow and you can go green in honor of Ireland, “The Emerald Isle”. March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day.
Did you know that New York was the first city to host a parade in 1762? Today parades and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are quite common. And another interesting fact is that St. Patrick was not actually Irish. He was born in Great Britain, captured by Irish raiders brought to Ireland as a child. That’s ok, because on St. Patrick’s Day everyone is Irish. I’m Greek but my husband is Irish-American and since my last name is totally Irish…I’m Irish by marriage.
As for wearing green there is a legend that green makes you invisible to leprechauns who will pinch you if they see you. Others say that it is because of the abundant green in Ireland. Whatever you believe, green is color of the day. Go green.
Supplies:
- 20 inches 1 ½” wide green wired ribbon
- 28” 3/8” printed St. Patrick’s Day ribbon
- Bowdabra Mini Bow maker
- Bowdabra tool and ruler
- Bowdabra bow wire
- Alligator clip covered with ribbon.
- Tiny coins or jewel
- Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- Lighter (to keep the ends from fraying, you may substitute clear nail polish or a commercial fray stop glue if you desire)
- Gather your supplies.
- Use the lighter or glue to the ends of the ribbons to keep from fraying.
- Cut an 18-inch length of bow wire, fold in half and insert into the Bowdabra bow maker. You will have a loop at one side and two loose wires at the other, which you will use to make a slip knot to tie your bow off when finished.
- Begin with the 3/8” wide ribbon. Insert the end of the ribbon and make a loop to the 3” mark on the ruler.
- Make a matching loop on the other side.
- Continue making the same size loops till you have four loops.
- Now, fold the wider ribbon in half to find the center and insert into the Bowdabra.
- Working with the ribbon end on the right side of the Bowdabra, bring the ribbon over and around and insert the end in the Bowdabra.
- Bring the opposite end across the first loop and insert that end under the first loop and into the Bowdabra. The top will look like an X.
- Now insert the bottom ribbon loop into the Bowdabra. Repeat with the top loop. You have formed your bow. Scrunch down with the Bowdabra wand.
- Insert the two loose wires through the loop and pull tight. Remove from the Bowdabra and tie a knot in the back. Adjust the bow if necessary.
- Using the hot glue gun and hot glue sticks attach some small coins or jewel to the center. Attach a prepared alligator clip to the back of the bow.
