How to Make Clay Buttons for Hair Bow Centers

Adding buttons to hair clips can make your hair bows unique, help coordinate colors, or even hide the Bowdabra Bow Wire in the center of the bow. Making your own clay buttons is easy, allows you to match your ribbon colors perfectly, and give your hair bows your own personal touch!

I worked on finding the best and the most easiest way to create clay buttons. Begin by conditioning the clay by rolling and softening the polymer clay in your hands. Once the clay is conditioned you can begin to work and mold it. After much trial and error I found an amazing way to roll clay and not leave any streaks, indents, or finger prints. Place the clay inside of a report cover. Report covers can be bought at any office supply store. They are perfect for working with clay because the clay doesn’t stick to the report cover, it is not thin like wax paper so it doesn’t rip, and it doesn’t leave any lines or streaks in the clay. Side-note: I just started working with polymer clay and don’t have a lot of the fancy tools. I wanted to find a way to inexpensively roll the clay out.

Using a rolling pin I rolled the clay evenly between the two cover sheets.

Next, using a thimble I formed the clay shape buttons.

Then using a thin tool like a tooth pick I created button holes.

I created several different style buttons some with hole centers, some with just indented centers, and others with large holed centers. I used craft tools I had on hand.

I baked the Sculpey Clay according to manufactures instructions. Because they are thin I only baked them for 13 minutes at 275 degrees.

You can leave the buttons just as they are or add some extra jazz. I used my Darice Rhinestone Setter to add little rhinestones to some of the buttons.

I also used stamping ink and a stamp to add extra interest to other buttons.

Add the homemade clay buttons to the center of your hair bows.
